Fun Post: DIY beauty products!!

I'm obsessed with makeup, but it can get pricey and this year I was saving up for a trip overseas so I didn't have a ton of extra money to spend. So I was experimenting a lot with homemade products! It's actually so fun! :P I have 7 products that I'm going to tell you how to make. I also have information about how the ingredients are beneficial to you! I got most of these ideas from magazine articles (17, teen vogue, cosmo, etc.), but I also got a few from youtube beauty gurus. :) I'll make sure to link the videos with each product if I got it off of youtube, otherwise it was just from various magazines :) Warning: it's a long post (what's new) but you can just skip through to the ones that look interesting to you :)

1. Honey Body Scrub/Exfoliator

What you'll need:

  • Two tablespoons of honey
  • One quarter cup of buttermilk
  • One tablespoon of light oil (eg. vegetable, safflower, etc.)
  • One egg white
  • One third of a cup of coffee grinds
  • One Quarter cup of wheat germ
  • (optional) a couple drops of essential oil

To prepare it all you have to do it mix it up in a bowl, then exfoliate your body with it! :) Since it's honey and buttermilk based it's a very moisturizing and gentle scrub, but still takes off all dead skin! Depending on if you have very dry skin, or more oily skin, I would recommend using this product anywhere from twice a week (only for very dry skin) to once every two weeks.
Honey: honey is very moisturizing (which is why you'll find it in a lot of natural shampoos and body treatments) and also works to attract and lock in moisture!
Buttermilk: As well as feeling great on your body and being quite moisturizing, buttermilk actually removes dead skin cells, instead of just adding moisture! I was surprised by this because it's so gentle!
Coffee Grinds: In this case, the coffee grinds give the buttermilk an extra boost and help to remove dead skin cells. But, did you know coffee grinds also work to reduce cellulite? Feel free to add a bit extra to the recipe, and use it on areas where you have cellulite and I promise it will help! :)
Wheat Germ: Wheat germ works as a gentle exfoliator
Essential Oil: In this case, the essential oil is just to add scent. I've never added it, but I'm sure if you got your favorite scent it would add a lot! :)
I got this idea from Lisa Kasanicky of ArizonaSpaGirls.com from this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VchMBi9fxlo

2. Eye Shadow Primer (or under eye concealer primer!)

What you'll need:

  • A small jar (I use old make-up jars and just clean them out with rubbing alcohol :) But you can also buy plastic jars from drugstores!)
  • Vaseline (or petroleum jelly)
  • Moisturizer
  • (optional) concealer or foundation, or eyeshadow
This one is sooo easy! Just take a little bit of petroleum jelly, and about double that amount of moisturizer. The amount of these two things will depend on how big your jar is/how much product you want to end up with. You kind of have to play with the amounts a bit, but once you get a smooth consistency with a little bit of stickyness to it (from the petroleum jelly) you're good to go! :) And,  if you want to go further than just a basic primer you can add a bit of concealer or foundation to help cancel out veins or discoloration of your eyelids. Or somethings I like to do is to is take a shimmery eyeshadow (or matte if you prefer, and any consistency ie. loose, cream, pressed and any favorite colour), and mix a bit in. When this goes on you lids, it will amplify the colour of the eyeshadown that go over top of it! Also, I sometimes use this as my under eye primer. I have really bad undereye circles, no matter how much sleep I get, so I add a little bit of a matte yellow-toned shadow (or even a yellow-toned concealer) and that cancels out the purple and blue, so that my actual concealer has to do less work, and I can use less of it. And the primer will keep it on all day! This honestly works as well as any high end primer, but is sososo much cheaper! I may never buy Urban Decay again :P
Vaseline: this will give the primer a more sticky texture and help it stick to your lids all day
Moisturizer: this will give the primer a smooth and gentle texture

3. Tinted Lip Conditioner

What you'll need:
  • Vaseline
  • drink powder (ie. Gatorade, Koolaid)
  • A small jar
Again, this is soo easy! Just take enough vaseline to almost fill the jar, then add your desired amount of drink powder to it, and stir! I recommend mixing in a little bit to start, then slowly adding more so that you don't end up with something way brighter than you wanted..cause that's not fun. The more you add, the longer the colour will last and the more opaque it will be. I only ever used red before, but if you want something more fun just take a little tiny bit of purple, and you'll end up with a pretty lavender colour :)
Vaseline: Super moisturizing, and has no taste at all :)
Drink Powder: Obviously to add colour, but will also taste amazing :)

4. Amazing Deep Conditioner!

What you'll need:
  • A ripe avocado
  • One table spoon of olive oil
  • One table spoon of honey
All you need to do to make this is mash up the avocado (you can even use one that's slightly overripe that you wouldn't normally eat so that you waste less by not throwing it out). Then mix in A table spoon of olive oil and a table spoon of honey. The smooth it onto dry hair (focusing on the ends), leave it for 15-20 minutes, then wash with shampoo and your regular conditioner and you're good to go! I use this once a week, but I use only about 3/4 of everything since my hair isn't that long (you can adjust it in other ways to suit your hair :) ).
All the ingredients serve the same purpose, which is adding and locking in moisture!
I got this from Missglamorazzi on youtube, from this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXpi0RacueE&feature=channel_video_title

5. Brush Cleanser (for spot cleaning)

What you'll need:
  • really moisturizing conditioner
  • baby shampoo
  • water
  • dawn dish soap (it's gentle but still strong)
  • an old spray bottle (cleaned with rubbing alcohol)
To make it all you need it do is put equal parts of conditioner, shampoo and dish soap and then two parts of water into the bottle and shake it! :) If you don't know how to spot clean your brushes, all you need to do is spray two or three sprays on a sponge (or paper towel if you don't have a sponge, but a sponge will produce less waste and you can reuse it :) ) then take a brush you want to spot clean and swirl it into the wet part of the sponge :). Oh, and if you don't know what spot cleaning vs. deep cleaning is, spot cleaning is just something you do to clean your brushes daily (or for eyeshadow brushes in between colours) and deep cleaning is something you do when brushes are really dirty, probably once or twice a week. I could do a tutorial on how to clean brushes.. leave a request below if it's something you'd like to see!
Conditioner: this will keep your brushes soft
Baby shampoo and Dawn Dish Soap: These will cleanse, but aren't too harsh so your brushes will still be soft
Water: this is just to dilute it so it's easier to spray and is more gently
Spray Bottle: I know I don't need to describe what this does :P but I just wanted to mention that if you don't have a spray bottle, any bottle is fine.. I just like spray ones because you'll waste less product and it will last longer :)

6. Glowy Tinted Moisturizer

What you'll need:
  • One third of a cup of moisturizer
  • A half to one and a half tablespoons of foundation (depending on desired coverage)
  • Cheaper powder bronzer or highlight
Mix moisturizer and foundation in a jar or bottle (you can use more or less depending on how big your container is). Then take a powder brush and swirl it into the bronzer/highlight until there is a lot of loose fallout in the product (this will happen faster/more easily with cheaper product) and tap the brush off back into the powder. Then pour/tap off all the fallout into a funnel leading into your jar. Mix it all together with a popsicle stick and spread it all over your face, or just on the high points of your face and you'll have a light coverage gorgeous "foundation" that won't sweat off your face, so it's perfect for summer :)  (Even though summer's almost over :'( )

7. Lip scrub

What you'll need:

  • koolaid powder in your choice of flavour/colour
  • raw sugar (or brown sugar, anything kind of chunky)
  • vaseline
Super easy! The sugar is the base of this, the powder is just to add colour and the vaseline is just to hold it all together :) Pretty much just fill a container to 3/4 full with sugar, then add a little but of drink mix and just enough vaseline to hold it together, but not so much that it's gooey and sticky (but if you add too much you can always add a little bit more sugar!). That's it! I have very dry lips so I like to use this every day or every other day, but if you have fairly soft lips, you can just use it as kind of a treat once a week :)
Sugar: Raw sugar is going to worn as an exfoliator to remove dead skin cells
Vaseline: Like I've mentioned before, vaseline is very moisturizing, so it will restore moisture to the lips because the sugar can sometime be a bit harsh on its own. It also makes the scrub a nice consistency :)
Drink Powder: will add a bit of colour to your lips and work sort of as a lip stain if you use this in the morning instead of at night, and will also make it taste a bit better :)

That's all! Sorry this was soooooo long!!! I honestly can't write short posts :( :P I'll try though!
Hope you enjoyed..let me know if you tried any of these out and how they worked for you!
